Cork County Council: Commemorations Videos

Cork County Council’s Commemorations Office, over the past number of years, has led on a number of different video productions. This post, contains in the one source, the complete range of video productions undertaken, and these are now set out:

1. Communities of Commemoration: Michael Collins House Museum
Located in Clonakilty, Michael Collins House is a museum dedicated to the Irish patriot and revolutionary hero Michael Collins. The museum tells the story of the life of Michael Collins and features Michael Collins’ death mask and the recently digitised Michael Collins Diaries (1918-1922). Jamie Murphy, Manager of Michael Collins House, discusses the importance of Michael Collins and how he shaped Irish history.
2. Communities of Commemoration: Passage West Maritime Museum
Located in Passage West, the Passage West Maritime Museum commemorated the 100-year anniversary of the Passage West Landings and the Battle of Rochestown and Douglas which took place in August 1922 and marked some of the bloodiest days of the Irish Civil War involving Free State and anti-Treaty Soldiers. Gavin Murphy and Jim Murphy from Passage West Maritime Museum speak about the Passage West Landings and how Passage West was the birthplace of Ireland’s steamship industry.
3. Communities of Commemoration: St. George’s Arts and Heritage Centre
Located in Mitchelstown, St. George’s Arts and Heritage Centre commemorated the 100-year anniversary of the looting and burning of Mitchelstown Castle, which took place in August 1922. The centenary of the burning of Mitchelstown Castle was marked by a history conference and the launch of the book by Bill Power “Doomed Inheritance, Mitchelstown Castle Burned and Looted, August 1922” Journalist and author Bill Power discusses the conference and the burning of Mitchelstown Castle.
4. Communities of Commemoration: Béal Na Bláth
On Sunday, August 21, thousands gathered in Béal na Bláth to commemorate the centenary of the death of Michael Collins. The historic occasion was attended by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin and An Tanáiste Leo Varadkar, and it was the first time that both leaders of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael addressed the annual commemoration. 5. Evidence on Conditions in Ireland Commemorative Documentary
Between November 1920 and January 1921 an American Commission hearing on the hardships being endured by people in Ireland took place – a hearing of conditions as they existed, due to the War of Independence. In December 1920 and January 1921, seven key witnesses from County Cork gave testimony, which contributed greatly to the efforts of raising awareness internationally towards Ireland’s struggle for freedom. Less than one year later on December 6th 1921, the Anglo-Irish Treaty had been signed. This documentary highlights the importance of these hearings and the County Cork involvement.

7. Tomás Mac Curtáin and Terence McSwiney - the County Cork Connection
A 360o short documentary undertaken by Wombat Media, working with and on behalf of Cork County Council to commemorate the County Cork connections of Terence McSwiney and Tomás Mac Curtáin. This production forms part of Cork County Council’s Decade of Centenaries Commemorative Programme, developed by Cork County Council’s Commemorations Committee and supported by Cork County Council and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media.
